Beginning Monday, new requirements will be implemented for recipients of California’s food benefits program as part of the federal government’s new eligibility.
Applicants for CalFresh, the state’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) program, will now have to satisfy certain work requirements to keep their benefits. The move comes under the Trump administration’s “One Big Beautiful Bill.”
The modified eligibility is for what the bill describes as able-bodied adults, or adults ages 18 to 64 whose physical or mental health does not interfere with their ability to work. Those applicants will be required to work or volunteer at least 20 hours a week to keep their benefits.
The new eligibility takes some things into consideration, making exceptions for the following individuals:
- Caring for a person with a disability
- Getting or applying for unemployment benefits
- Going to school, college, or a training program at least half-time (although additional student eligibility rules may apply)
- More. For a full list, click here.
Although the requirements will begin on Monday, recipients will still have three months to meet the new eligibility.
